Tin Cladding vs. Timber Cladding

Posted: 9th May 2014

There are actually a lot of materials used for cladding. Two of the most popular are tin (steel) cladding and timber cladding. Find out the differences or similarities between the two:

Strengths: Both are actually very strong. Wood, for one, is known for its durability based on Janka hardness. In fact, contrary to popular belief, wood can withstand many harmful elements, though it has the tendency to rot if there is a very high level of moisture around, or get very sun affected in Australian conditions.

Metal, on the other hand, is more durable: The one thing you have to be mindful of is the development of rust. This can be easily rectified by using galvanized or colour coated steel profiles. If you are using aluminium, you will find the metal resistant to corrosion or rust. That’s why it is often used in properties found within the coastal regions.

Design: There is no doubt wood is incredibly beautiful. It carries a certain amount of charm, which increases the overall appeal of the house or building. It has texture, colour, and grain that you cannot readily find in tin or metal. Metal can make a building or home appear sleek and modern. If this is what you want, it’s pretty obvious what you need is metal.

Price: There is no real cheap option. However, because of the strict regulations in the harvesting of trees, a lot of wood sidings and cladding have become even more expensive. Meanwhile, there are quite often more dynamic metal cladding options that are affordable.

Maintenance: When it comes to maintenance, wood is a lot more difficult to maintain. It requires regular upkeep every couple of years if you want them to last for a very long time. You may have to change certain areas that are showing some signs of wear and tear or apply paint.

Installation
: There are many ways on how to install wood cladding, such as horizontal and vertical jointing, but the metal cladding still stands to be much easier to set up, with less structural requirements.
